Does Google Have a Face Search? What Google Lens Can and Can't Find

Google can search by image, so it seems natural to upload a photo of a person and expect Google to find every other photo of them. It usually doesn't. Google's image tools are built to find images that look alike, which is different from finding the same face in a different photo.

This guide explains what Google Lens actually does with a photo of a face, what Google Photos' face grouping is for, and what to use when you really need to search by face.

What happens when you upload a face to Google Lens

Google Lens, which powers "search by image" in the Google app, Chrome and google.com, looks for images that are visually similar to the one you give it, and for pages that contain the same image. Google's own help pages describe it that way: you upload or select an image, adjust the selection box, and scroll through related results.

In practice, that means Lens is very good at:

And it often misses different photos of the same person. A photo of you at a wedding and a photo of you at work have different backgrounds, clothes, lighting and angles. Visually they're different images, even though the face is the same.

How to get the best results from Google Lens with a face

  1. Open the Google app or Chrome and tap the Lens icon in the search bar, or go to google.com on a computer and choose search by image.
  2. Upload the photo.
  3. Drag the selection box tightly around the face, so the background and clothes count for less.
  4. Check the results for pages that contain the same photo, which is often where you'll find where a picture came from.

What about Google Photos?

Google Photos has a feature called face groups: it groups similar faces in your own photo library, so you can label them and search your photos by person. It doesn't search the web. According to Google, face groups and labels are visible only to you by default and aren't shared when you share photos. The feature isn't available in every region or for every account type, and you can turn it off in Google Photos settings, which deletes your face groups.

When you need a face search engine instead

If your goal is to find other photos of the same person, you need a tool built for face matching. Face search engines compare the face itself rather than the whole image, so they can connect photos taken years apart, in different places. Common reasons to use one:

Our comparison of face search engines covers what each one searches, what's free and whether it works in the EU, and our guide to reverse image search vs face recognition explains the technology.

Use face search responsibly. Search for your own face, or someone else's only with their consent. A similar-looking face is never proof of who someone is.

Found photos of yourself on Google?

If a search turns up photos of you that you want gone, Google has several removal routes, depending on whether the photo is still online and what it shows. Our guide to removing photos of yourself from Google walks through each one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Google search by face?
Not in the way a face search engine does. Google Lens looks for images that are visually similar to the one you upload, so it reliably finds copies of the same photo, but it often misses different photos of the same person.
How do I use Google Lens with a photo of a face?
Open the Google app or Chrome, tap the Lens icon, upload the photo and drag the selection box tightly around the face. Lens then shows visually similar images and pages that contain the same image.
Does Google Photos recognise faces?
Google Photos can group similar faces in your own library so you can label and search them. Those face groups are private to you, aren't shared when you share photos, and aren't available in every region.
Is there a free face search?
Google Lens, TinEye and Bing are free but match images, not faces. Some face search engines offer free searches: Protevio, for example, allows 10 a day with no credit card.
How do I remove photos of me that show up on Google?
Google has removal tools for outdated results, explicit images shared without consent, images of minors and personal information, plus EU right-to-be-forgotten delisting. Our guide to removing photos from Google covers each one.
