Face search engines all promise the same thing: upload a photo, see where that face appears online. In practice they search different parts of the web, work in different countries, take different payment methods, and do very different things once you find a match. This guide compares the main options side by side so you can pick the right one for what you actually need.
What actually matters when choosing a face search engine
Marketing pages focus on accuracy and index size, which are hard to verify from the outside. These five questions tell you more:
- Which parts of the web does it search? Some engines focus on public websites like news, blogs and forums. Others add social media profiles, mugshot databases or video platforms. The right choice depends on where you expect the photos to be.
- Does face search work where you live? Privacy rules differ by country, and at least one major tool switches off face search entirely for EU users.
- How do you pay, and can you get your money back? Card and bank payments come with buyer protection. Crypto-only payments with no refunds don't.
- What happens to the photo you upload? You are handing over a picture of a face. Check whether it's stored, for how long, and why.
- What can you do after you find a match? Finding a photo is half the job. If you want it gone, look for takedown help, evidence reports and monitoring alerts.

Each face search engine in detail
Protevio
Best for: people in Europe who want to find their own photos online and get them taken down.
Protevio is a reverse face search engine built in the EU. You upload a photo, it searches its index of faces collected from public websites, and you can act on what you find from the same account: generate a PDF evidence report, send takedown requests, and set face alerts that notify you when new matches appear.
Strengths: a free tier with 10 searches a day and no credit card; takedown tools built in, plus free DMCA templates; prices in euros with card, SEPA, iDEAL or Bancontact; uploaded photos are processed temporarily, not stored permanently.
Limitations: it doesn't search social networks or dating apps; its index is newer than engines that have been crawling for years, so coverage is still growing; takedown requests need a Vio Shield plan.
PimEyes
Best for: broad open-web face searches and long-term monitoring.
PimEyes is the best-known consumer face search engine. It searches public websites rather than social networks, and a New York Times test found matches on news sites, wedding photography pages, review sites, blogs and adult sites. Free users get a limited number of daily searches, but source links stay locked until you subscribe. Higher tiers add alerts, reports and takedown help. Our PimEyes alternatives guide and PimEyes pricing breakdown go deeper.
FaceCheck.ID
Best for: checking a dating match or business contact before you trust them.
FaceCheck.ID is built around verifying strangers. Alongside social media, news and video results, it indexes mugshot and sex-offender websites and flags matches from what it considers high-risk sources. It's operated by a company registered in Belize.
Strengths: it searches social media, which many engines don't; it shows a match confidence score on every result; it says its AI is trained not to index children's faces.
Limitations: payment is by cryptocurrency only and all sales are final; credits expire, from 14 days on the smallest package; it's built for investigating others, not removing your own photos.
FaceCheck.ID itself warns that unrelated people often look alike and that a face match alone should never be the basis for judging someone. That warning applies to every tool on this list.
If the crypto-only payment rules it out for you, our FaceCheck.ID alternatives guide compares the options that take cards.
Lenso.ai
Best for: general reverse image search outside the EU.
Lenso.ai sorts results into categories: People, Places, Duplicates, Similar and Related. Its Professional plan adds a research mode with filters by language, date, size and domain, plus a DMCA Assist feature that turns the links you select into a ready-to-send takedown email. The catch for European users: according to Lenso itself, face search (the People category) is not available in the EU. If you're in the EU and that category doesn't appear in your results, that's why. The other categories still work.
Social Catfish
Best for: checking an online romance or contact.
Social Catfish combines reverse image search with lookups by name, email, phone number, username and address. It's built for identity verification and scam checks rather than for finding and removing your own photos.
Google Lens, Bing Visual Search and TinEye
Best for: free checks for copies of one specific photo.
These free tools match images, not faces. Upload a photo and they find the same picture, or cropped and edited versions of it, elsewhere online. They won't find a different photo of you taken on another day. They're a good free first step if you're tracking one picture, such as a profile photo someone copied, but they aren't face search engines. Our guide to reverse image search vs face recognition explains the difference.
Which face search engine should you use?
- "I'm in Europe and want to know where my photos are, and get them removed." Protevio. Start with the free daily searches, and upgrade only if you need takedowns or alerts.
- "Someone copied one specific photo of me." Start free with Google Lens or TinEye. If you then need different photos of your face, move to a face search engine.
- "I want to check whether a dating match is real." A tool that searches social media, such as FaceCheck.ID or Social Catfish, is better suited. Weigh FaceCheck.ID's crypto-only, no-refund payments before you buy. Our guide on checking if someone is catfishing you covers the free steps first.
- "I'm outside the EU and want one tool for places, duplicates and faces." Lenso.ai's categories are built for that.
- "I want the widest possible net." Use more than one engine. Each one indexes a different slice of the web, so a miss on one doesn't mean the photo isn't out there.
Use these tools responsibly. Search for your own face, or someone else's with their consent. Looking up strangers can be unlawful depending on where you are, and a similar-looking face is not proof of identity.
Removing your face from these engines
Every engine keeps its own index, so you need to opt out of each one separately, and opting out only hides results inside that engine. The photo stays on the original website until you get it removed there, usually with a DMCA notice if you own the photo or a GDPR erasure request if you're in the EU. Our step-by-step guide to opting out of PimEyes, FaceCheck.ID, Lenso.ai and Protevio covers what each one asks for and how long it takes.
